Listening Prayer Follow-Up: Sharing What You Hear From God

Sometimes as we interact with God, we sense we are to share what we hear from Him with someone else. We may feel apprehensive, excited, or uncertain about it. Whatever the case, there are some things to consider.

1.  Be humble–

We might be sure what we sensed from God is just what someone else is looking for–the wisdom or direction they need. We might even be sure God asked us to pass it on. Yet anytime we hear something for someone else, we want to recognize there is a possibility we missed hearing perfectly. There’s also a chance this is not the right time for us to share, but for now, God is asking us to pray for them.

2.  Be gentle and honoring–

There are gentle ways to offer what we’ve heard to others for their consideration. Rather than saying, “God told me to tell you…,” we can share how God encouraged us. “You came to mind as I thought about this, and I wondered if it might be an encouragement for you, too.” Or simply speaking out the encouragement: “I see how you are honoring your mother by….”  or “I see you as a woman of patience. That trait is growing in you in beautiful ways.”

When we say, “God told me…,” it’s as if we’re setting ourselves up as an expert. People might feel safe discussing something or disagreeing with us, but how do they question God?

3.  Ask questions–

Before giving advice, it’s wise to simply ask questions about the situation you know is on a person’s heart. Using the insights the Lord gave you, your questions might help someone come up with the plan the Lord put on your heart. People are often more willing to take their own advice than take counsel from another.

4. Wonder–

If  the timing seems right for the insight the Lord gave you, posing an “I wonder” statement can be effective. “I wonder if asking Ann to step in would be helpful” or “I wonder if it’s time to talk to your son’s teacher.” You are not the expert telling someone what to do or the one who is more spiritual. You are offering something to consider.

Ask the Lord for more ideas for sharing with others, and pass them on here.
Our God is a creative genius. Let’s listen to Him and learn from one another.

Pray:  Lord, thank you for giving me spiritual ears, eyes, and senses and for communicating with me. Teach me to share about You in the most loving ways possible–that others might long to hear from You, too. May I be an invitation to Your goodness.

Suddenly, the glory
of the God of Israel
appeared from the east.
The sound of his coming was like
the roar of rushing waters,
and the whole landscape
shone with his glory.
