The Invitation: God is a giver. He demonstrates this nature to give in countless ways and designed the very cycle of life to be sustained through giving.
While on earth, Jesus showed us what it looks like to live life as a giver. He washed His disciples’ feet, fed the hungry, and healed the sick. Then there was the cross where Jesus laid down His life to provide life for all humanity. He gave everything.
With Christmas just days away, most of us anticipate the joy of giving and the looks on our loved-ones’ faces when they unwrap gifts especially chosen for them. Their joy brings us joy.
But what would it be like if you had sacrificed to give a loved one something they could never afford, yet is exactly what they need for security, health and well being—and then they refused to receive your gift?
Let’s take time this Christmas season to open our hearts to fully receive the gift the Father has given us in Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us.
He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all–how will he not also,
along with him, graciously give us all things?
–Romans 8:32 (NIV)
Your Response: Father, sometimes I am so focused on how I can give, that I forget to open my heart or take time to receive. Thank you for sending Jesus, Emmanuel, God with me! Thank you for the joy, hope, forgiveness, grace and mercy You freely offer. I open my heart to receiving from You. Lord, is there a gift You would like me to receive and enjoy today?
As I fully unwrap and receive this gift from You, do Your eyes light up? What do You say to me?
